Coast Camp 2008
April, Bowen, Lanik, and I made a trip to Sacramento to pick up uncle Kendall and backpack to the beach in Point Reyes National Seashore. This was Bowens (15 months) first backpacking trip ever. April, Lanik, and I had already made two backpacking trips to Point Reyes prior to this trip.
After picking up our permits at the visitor centers we drove to the trail head and prepared for our hike. There are two trails to Coast Camp one is a steeper 2.0 miles the second is a flat 2.8 miles. We chose the steeper shorter trail.
We left the Kelty Child carrier in the car and just decided to carry bowen for the 2 mile hike. Lanik (4 years old) carried all his own gear except for a sleeping bag, April carried that in her pack. Just as we were about to leave the car I noticed I forgot my Canon…. I am glad I alway bring out little kodak just in case.
Kendall hiking up the trail with backpack, cooler, and skimboard.

Bowen surprised us all by hiking quite a bit of the way to camp.

and spent a bit of time eating dirt…..

We hiked to our campsite, set up our tents, then headed down the short trail to the beach.

After a few hours on the beach we hiked back up to camp to have dinner. Just after we finished eating we spotted a whale spouting just off shore. We ran down to the beach to watch the whale and the sun set over the ocean.
The whale was REALLY close to the shore, I was fairly upset I forgot my S3. But even though our little point and shoot does not take the same quality of photos it got the job done.
After the sun set both kids were out before it was dark. Early in the morning Lanik got sick with a little stomach bug and was having a tuff time. We was able to hike the two miles out but wanted to go home. So we cut our trip short and head back to Sacramento. Both the kids feel asleep for most of the drive and were feeling better and we rolled into Kendalls place in Sacramento.

Those are some pretty sweet pictures! Did you take them yourself? Some of those appear to be taken by a professional photographer and copied off his computer. Anyhow; I find it amazing that someone could do that hike with a skimboard and a cooler which made it that much cooooooooooooler.
Love the pic of your two boys in the sand! They are so adorable, it looks like lots of fun. I can’t wait to go there someday.
Good work on the photos Kendall, I am still pissed I forgot my good camera.
