Coast Camp 2005
In 2005 we lived in Sacramento for a few months so we did our best to take full advantage of being so close to the Pacific ocean. Our first backpacking trip to Point Reyes got off to a rocky start when Lanik (2yo at the time) got sick in Vaccaville and made quite the mess of the backseat of our car. After we got things cleaned up on the side of the freeway we decided to push forward with our plans.
As we arrived and the visitors center we spoke with the ranger about changing out permits to a closer campground. Our permit was for Wildcat (6 miles each way), but with Lanik being sick we wanted to be closer to a car if we needed to leave. The Rangers were very nice and understanding and let us change our permits. Lanik had taken a long nap and was very happy he remained perfectly fine for the rest of our trip. So we started of hiking to Coast Camp, at the suggestion of the rangers we took the long flat route out (blue route on the map) to Coast Camp.

First view of the Ocean off the trail.

A few photos from the hike out (marked in red on the above map).

After getting back to the car we spent the rest of the day check out Point Reyes North Beach and McClures Beach.
A few weeks later were back at Point Reyes ready to hike out to Coast Camp for our second time. This trip the weather a bit more typical for this area, foggy.
This guy walked right by our camp.

April getting crazy on the rope swing.
On this trip we spent more hiking south along the coast down to Sculptured Beach (marked in yellow on the above map).

The Arches on Sculptured Beach.

As unimpressive as this photo may look to the casual observer, I had to dig a 18′ deep hole in the sand to get this fire going in 20-35mph winds. I have started plenty of fires in snow and rain but this fire was my crowning achievement.
