Moab February 2012

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Every year we make at least one winter trip to Moab during the off season.  Hotels are cheap and the trails are typically empty aside from the few people willing to deal with a bit of cold weather.  For our 2012 trip we got an early start Saturday morning and drove out to Island in the Sky . We had epic skies and dark clouds for our entire drive down but of course as soon as we got to the False Kiva trail head the sky became clear and blue.  The kids are amazing hikers especially our 5yo, I have a feeling that kid will be pounding out some serious miles later this year.

Lightning on Timp

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

In typical fashion, everyone bailed and I was yet again hiking Timp alone. A few weeks prior I had made a solo backpacking trip to Emerald Lake and this time I was ready to hit the summit. The forecast called for a 40% chance of thunder storms, no big deal. I headed up the Timpoonoeke trail with an over night pack and my camera gear with high hopes of hitting the summit and spending the night in the upper basins of Timpanogos.

I’ve been working hard on reducing my pack weight over the last year and this trip was my best effort to date. Overnight gear, clothes, food, 2 liters of water, and 10lbs of camera gear for a total of 32lbs. Usually I’m pushing the 40′s with all the junk I haul around so my pack felt super light and I blasted up the trail and soon found myself alone in the upper basin. (more…)

Grand Canyon 2011

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

We wanted a getaway with no kids before having three and it will be a long time before we can get away with no kids again. We kept changing our minds where to go, being about seven months pregnant meant not too much hiking, cooler weather and no farther than 6-7 hours. We finally decided on the North Rim of the Grand canyon where the elevation is surprisingly high and temperatures were surprisingly lower than home, and would work our way home from there.

On our way down we stopped at Colorado City to get out and hike water canyon. The hike was beautiful and a nice break from the drive, the canyon was nice and cool once you got up there a ways to the nice water channels. (more…)
