California 2012

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Every year we try to make at least one trip to California to visit my family in Sacramento.  Of course we always make time for a quick camping trip near the ocean, typically in Point Reyes.

We spent the first few days of our trip driving across Nevada and hanging out in Sacramento.  On Sunday we stocked up on goodies at Trader Joes then drove to Samuel P. Taylor State Park to camp for the night.   With no public land remotely close to the bay area a $35 a night car camping spot is about as good as it gets.  Those of us living in Utah where there’s so much public land available for free camping don’t realize how lucky we are really are. Ibantik Lake

Finally by the end of July the Uintas were clear of snow and in prime condition for camping. My friend Nick invited me along for a quick point to point back packing trip in the Uintas. The mosquitoes were ruthless but the temperatures were perfect and we witnessed a spectacular sunset.

We started our trip by parking my car at the Crystal Lake trail head then we drove up that road to the Bald Mountain pass. The was plan was to backpack around Notch Mountain, spend then night at Ibantik Lake, then hike down to my car at the Crystal Lake TH. The first few miles of trail were slightly downhill so we made great time and had excellent views. (more…)

Coyote Gulch 4.2011

After weeks of planning and before our trip even started we were faced with the harsh reality that due to a possible government shut down we may have to cancel our trip to Coyote Gulch. Fortunate for us the shut down never happened so we were able to stick with our original plan.

Day1:

We left Orem at 7:30 and made it into the town of Escalante around 12:30. The only place open was a gas station so we ate a nutritious meal of microwave burritos and doughnuts then drove down the hole in the rock road. I had spent quite a bit of time mapping out all the routes in and out of Coyote Gulch and went with the easiest route from Chimney rock to make backpacking with the kids (4 and 7) as easy as possible. The route from Chimney to Hurricane has no established trail but the route was easy to follow. The last 1/4 mile is all slick rock and required a bit of trial and error route finding to get into Hurricane Wash.

April, Whitney, and Boys about 1/4 of the down to Hurricane Wash.
