Escalante 5.2011

Things are starting to warm up in southern Utah and the summer heat is not far away. We took advantage of the perfect late spring conditions on Memorial day weekend with a combined car camping and backpacking trip in Escalante.

Day: 1

April, Whitney, the kids and I left Orem around 1pm and met up with Brittany and Brayden in Escalante around 5. We drove south down the hole in the rock road and stopped at at Devils Garden to walk around Metate Arch followed by a quick stop at Dance Hall Rock before setting up camp at Sooner Rocks. (more…)

Arches10-2010

Last week while April was out of town the boys, Whitney, and I made a trip down to the Moab area to do some hiking and camping. We did not leave Orem until 4pm and the with construction delays on I-15 we ended up setting up camp just outside of Island in the Sky in the Dark. We got the boys settled in the tent, made a small fire and shot plenty of long exposures of the desert sky.

Escalante – October 2009

It had been at least six years since April and I had been down to Escalante so for one of our last desert trips of the year we packed up the boys and headed way down south. The drive did not take nearly as long as I remembered and before we knew it we were searching for a campsite along highway 12. We found an excellent spot with a great view then drove to the Escalante River gorge to take a short hike along the river before dinner.
