Every year we make at least one winter trip to Moab during the off season. Hotels are cheap and the trails are typically empty aside from the few people willing to deal with a bit of cold weather. For our 2012 trip we got an early start Saturday morning and drove out to Island in the Sky . We had epic skies and dark clouds for our entire drive down but of course as soon as we got to the False Kiva trail head the sky became clear and blue. The kids are amazing hikers especially our 5yo, I have a feeling that kid will be pounding out some serious miles later this year.

Moab February 2012
Friday, March 9th, 2012Winter at The Wave
Friday, January 20th, 2012Once we had permits in hand our plan was for April and I to take our 2month old baby down to Kanab and Page for a weekend of hiking, photos, and hotels. The weather in the area had been fantastic for the days leading up to our trip but there was a huge plunge in the temperature on the days allotted to us by our permits. It was going to be far too cold take the baby out hiking so April stayed home while Whitney and I made the drive down to Kanab and pulled into our hotel just as the snow started to fall. I never sleep well in hotels so I tossed and turned for most of the night dreaming about shooting some photos of the wave.
Not much snow accumulated in Kanab that night but we were a little worried about the conditions of the House Rock Valley Road so we checked out of the hotel well before sunrise and headed off towards the wave. The further east we traveled the snow storm increased its production. (more…)
Coyote Buttes 2-2011
Friday, March 11th, 2011After years of trying (and a few years of giving up) we finally scored permits to hike Coyote Buttes North and the Wave. A huge thank you goes out to Tyler and Alene for entering the lottery and inviting us to come along.
April, Clint, and I left Orem around 9am and made the long drive down south to Kanab. For the week leading up to our trip the weather reports had looked anything but promising with high winds, rain, and snow within the forecast. We stopped for lunch and then went to the BLM office to try and get Clint a walk-in permit and check up on road conditions for the House Rock Valley road. Luckily the bad weather forecast scared off the tourists and Clint was able to purchase a very rare day before walk-in permit for the Wave. A little under an hour later we were rolling down the House Rock Valley road looking for a place to camp. We quickly set up a mile south of the state line campground in a primitive site and drove to the wire-pass trailhead to make a quick hike down to Buckskin Gulch and back before dark.
